Reeves exploring overhaul of property taxes ahead of budget
The Autumn Budget will take place on Wednesday 26 November 2025, and whilst the property industry waits for the publication of the UK Government's Housing Strategy, several reports have suggested that the Treasury is considering proposals to shake up property taxation, including imposing income tax on all profits from rental income and replacing Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) with a new national property tax applied to owner occupied homes sold for more than £500,000. No decisions have been finalised at this stage; officials are still modelling the impacts, as Chancellor Rachel Reeves faces mounting pressure to balance the public finances.
